Christianity, certainly and I believe most religions in all probability, have always recruited through taking advantage of those in times of weakness, stress, disadvantage and/or ignorance, whether individually or collectively.

Yes, as you say, at times religion has and does provide practical help but virtually always at the cost of indoctrination.

Religions have probably been more divisive and caused more harm to humanity than any other human construct ever. Sadly, they still do so.
