Diversity - yes, its portrayal remains an issue.
I empathise with how fake, even perhaps hypocritical, this 'diversity' inclusion can cause one to feel.
However, to give the film-makers the benefit of the doubt I'd offer a couple of comments:
1. They seem to be castigated by one group or another by any that is not represented.
2. In the past, almost the opposite was true - film-makers would be crucified by many for showing what the self-righteous and ignorant or simply well-conditioned majority saw to be 'perversion' or 'immorality'.
3. Perhaps it also only seems odd because until recently most, if not all, of these groups have been or even had to stay, 'hidden', for their own safety, reputation, work security and such. Accordingly, they were generally not only just under-represented in film, tv and so on but virtually not represented at all.
So, perhaps this 'overkill', actually represents a 'correction' period and gradually the increasing acceptance of 'normal' as rightfully inclusive of 'all genders / physical & mental characteristics / ehtnicities / etc. by society in general will also see a less paranoiac approach to character inclusion and presentation on the screen and elsewhere.
