I agree with virtually all that you have written here.

I don't have the words to describe such an obnoxious, uncaring, insidious, destructive betrayal as has happened to Gisele Pelicot.

I do not accept that "any man can be induced to rape, to assault you" or that "any man" can be "persuaded" to do the same.

I can accept your anger and even share it but I know that I could not be induced or persuaded to carry out such acts.

I am not trying to nitpick. I simply consider this an unfortunate allegation as I feel it will only feed the ire of those men who cannot or will not understand why you are so outraged about this.

You may well ask, 'Well there's no hope for them so I don't care how they feel about what I've written' but surely it is precisely the lack of understanding, the destructive indoctrination, the lack of empathy and the failure of such men to control their own sexual feelings and impulses as all sound minded, caring and respectful human beings must do. If we don't then we are nothing more than lesser animals who operate purely on instinct for survival and procreation.

As much as Gisele's husband's actions are abominable, I'd also suggest that we need to highlight the ways in which our society conditions both men and women to see each in a particular way and as having particular roles. Some of this conditioning today is done clearly for financial gain. Some of it is a legacy of social mores and traits over many hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of years. Probably the most powerful cause of it has been religion.

I don't condone for one moment the actions of Gisele's husband or the many cowardly abusers who engaged in his obnoxious and abusive use of his wife. What I write is not intended to excuse these men - indeed, I'm not sure that they have any right to be called men, 'male' is the best they deserve. No, I make these points only because I believe that such behaviours are symptoms and whilst it is clearly necessary to deal with those, it is just as important, perhaps even more-so to deal with the root causes. Those causes lie with the whole of society and both sexes, not only with the culprits who act on them.

Take care. Stay safe. ☮️
