Not really. Human beings tend to identify most with their 'own'. The US has also held, in modern times of course, probably the closest situation we have had to an 'empire' since the final collapse of that of Britain, after WWII.

It does not follow that those responding from a US point of view are "incapable of seeing beyond that viewpoint."
