Pointless, selfish, self-aggrandising ceremonies for supposed 'celebrities' who, with a few exceptions, have done little for anyone but themselves and their employers and, at that, not much more than attract simpletons to pay outlandish amounts of money so that these arrogant, glamour bores can get rich.

Meanwhile, billions in the majority world starve, are dispossessed, are enslaved, suffer preventable disease or suffer and die in any number of other ways.

If 'Hollywood' and its ilk were to take an average wage for all of those involved and contribute the rest to ending disadvantage across the world, then there might be a valid reason for occasions such as this one.
