"There is a general belief that someone else (not ourselves) is responsible for our safety when we get drunk. " - Is there?

I doubt you can provide any evidence that such is the case.

This type of simplistic nonsense is sadly common in responses to this article.

Incapacity, poor reasoning, poor judgment and impetuous behaviour can be the result of myriad causes. I very much doubt that any of us has not been subject to such an experience at one time or another. For many of us, I suspect that truth be known, the experience has occurred on many more than one occasion and for a variety of reasons and in a variety of contexts.

Instead of "casting the first stone" - as the Christian followers might say - it is beholden on each of us individually and all of us collectively to do what we can to care for those who cannot care for themselves.

It is the failure to understand that fact that is a major facilitator, if not cause, of the continuing harm and tragedy in our world.
