Yes, far too much attention is given to body image, both by individuals and by society as a whole. Part of the cause is the influence that Christianity has had on social attitudes to women. Part of it is also a result of the preoccupation of society with the young.

One can't expect the young to realise what is before them or even to be aware of how they are being conditioned from a very early age. However, if there was better understanding of life and how, for all of us, there is constant change with inevitable results that are often extremely disheartening, particularly if we concentrate only on physical beauty, then I think that we would have a more sensible, content and happy society.

With age, the body loses much of its attractiveness, but the mind gains much greater equanimity and humility - at least generally, that is the case. It would be useful if we learned to appreciate that factor at an early age, for it would give balance to our perspective.
