Yes, you are right that this is a worldwide phenomenon. I'd also tend to agree with the notion that capitalism is a primary cause, whether it is private or state capitalism.

The impact of privately owned and almost monopolised media ownership is certainly a contributing factor. Anyone who watches with awareness can point out the major culprits. Indeed, the media is one area where nations that control the state owned media could be said to be a tad more honest than those that have more *independent* channels. Why? Because, in effect, those *independent* channels are owned by just one or two people and are, effectively, just as controlled & manipulated to serve the message their owners wish to give - yet they pretend to be free and open.

Unfortunately, what is known as 'civilisation' is probably the least civil way in which any social grouping has ever existed. Certainly modern civilisation is far more about aspiration, acquisition, materialism, status & power, than it is about serving community or caring for one another.

'Civility', today, is about political correctness and politeness and adherence to protocols. It is fine for the (usually a misnomer) leaders of nations to host one another and have friendly dialogue, even when one of them is guilty of outrageous actions, even atrocities.

As long as our prevailing models actually portray excess as a worthwhile ambition and fete and extravagantly reward simply the good fortune to be talented at sport or music or whatever; then the rest of us - as a generalisation - will praise and copy these models and most will do so mindlessly. Thus, the Trump phenomenon and currently, the election of an Italian who considers Mussolini to have been a hero of the people.

I don't know what or if there even is an answer. I am not in the least conventionally religious - though some have said I'm the most religious person they've known. All I believe I know, is that unless and until individuals recognise that a harmonious world is only possible when we put others first, rather than ourselves, the situation is unlikely to improve.

Sadly, I can't see any sign of that happening.
